How is carbon dating used to study evolution?

For the most part, it's not.

It is a common misconception that scientists use carbon dating to date fossils.

They don't.

This is for two reasons. First, Carbon-14 has a half-life of only 5568 years. This means that it can't be used for dating anything much older than 40,000 years ... 60,000 years tops ... and most fossils are considerably older than that. The second reason is that carbon dating can only be used for once-living tissue ... since it is based on some plant fixing CO2 from the atmosphere into solid form in the plant (or in whatever eats the plant). Fossils are not once-living tissue, but rock.

Thus carbon dating is very useful for archaeology ... where dating of bone, soft-tissue, leather, paper, papyrus, cloth, wood, etc. into the tens of thousands of years ... but it is not good for fossils.
