Potassium Argon Dating?

Half of the isotopes of K^40 decay into isotopes Ar^40 in 1.3 billion years. One sample is analyzed and found to contain one atom of Ar^40 for every 3600 atoms of K^40. What is the age of that sample?

The half life of 40K (not K^40) is 1.3 billion years. In other words, half of the 40K decays to 40Ar in 1.3 billion years. If you have one atom 40Ar and 3600 atoms of 40K in your sample, that means the original amount of 40K must have been 3601 atoms of 40K (assuming the 40Ar is a daughter product of 40K and there wasn't any contamination etc).

To simplify, the current ratio of 40Ar to the original amount of 40K is 1:3601.

1/3601 x 1.3 billion = 0.36 million years.

This is an over simplified question, as there is no allowance for many complex factors that a radiochronologist must deal with to achieve an acceptable age date for a rock sample, including the very poor choice of this particular radioistope for a sample this young.
