Using Excel to organize a library? (+more info)?

I haven't used Microsoft Excel for years, but I now need to use it to make a spreadsheet 'library' to organize my purchases; not to organize the purchases by date or price, but in general as a library of 'what I've bought', sorted along with the additional info columns such as the individual dates and prices.

Are there any free templates online, or tutorials that will help me remember how to use Excel for this purpose? Again; last time I used Excel was back in high school, approx. 3 years ago, and I have no idea if what I remember now is the only thing I remember about Excel.

Excel comes with a help feautre built in, but what you are trying to do would be fairly easy. Just open a new workbook and set up your first row as the header row - titles for each category that you want, i.e., date, item, cost.
Then starting in the second row start putting in the information. Don't worry about the order, you can sort it later. I'd suggest setting up the date column (highlight the whole column by clicking on the top of it with the down arrow to highlight the whole thing) and then go to Format Cells, type, date, and choose a format like mm/dd/yyyy. Ok.
You can have the text wrap in the cells for the longer information, you can separate price per item, or total price, tax, whatever. You might want to add whether it was paid by check cash or credit card or whatever would help you in the long run. You can change the width of a column by clicking on the line at the very top and when you see a double line just clicking and hold and drag it over. You can highlight the whole table by clicking on the upper left box and then formatting things like font type and size.
You may want another column to do subtotals, say for a month at a time. a simple formula is =sum(a1:a23).
Depending on what your goal is, you can set up columns for categories of types of expenses, (car expense, utilities, paint, travel, whatever) so you can total different columns. You can sort filter and move things around. Have fun.
