Why are geologists able to estimate the age of rock strata using index fossils? ?
Why are geologists able to estimate the age of rock strata using index fossils?
A. Index fossils formed only in certain kinds of rocks.
B. Two methods of dating need to be used to date rock strata.
C. The organisms that formed index fossils lived for long periods of time.
D. The organisms that formed index fossils lived only during a specific time period.
Any help. I will be most thankful
D. Index fossils are organisms that are always found in a specific depth of strata relative to others, regardless of where in the world they are found.
The important point is that index fossils are used to *estimate* the age of the rock strata. For an absolute age, we can still verify the age of the strata using radiometric dating.
It never stops amazing me how Creationists like 'howtoknowthetruth' are so willing to show how *little* they know about science ... and therefore how Creationism is built on *ignorance*, not knowledge, of science. Carbon dating is NOT used for dating rock strata because its range is limited to about 60,000 years old ... and most rocks and fossils are in the *millions* of years old ... and second because Carbon dating is used for once living tissue (like bones, skin, leather, wood, paper, cloth, etc. ... but NOT rock or fossils).

Absolute and Relative Dating Methods in Prehistory $103.56 This work challenges the claim that Hallan Cemi (near Batman in Southeastern Turkey) was occupied during the Epipaleolithic (11th millennium BP). While technotypological analyses of some objects, chipped stone in particular, appear to place the sites occupation within the 11th millennium, the iconography etched into ground stone and worked bone is too similar to much later sites nearby and in the Urfa Plain to ignore. Various descriptions of the site have been given, from Epipaleolithic to Aceramic Neolithic. This terminological discrepancy reflects not only on the problem of dating Hallan Cemi, but also on the larger issue of how one should describe the prehistory of Southeastern Anatolia. The latter problems are claimed to be the combined product of a) the relatively few sites within the region with which to contextualize Hallan Cemi and construct a local chronocultural scheme, and b) the related issue of imposing terminologies from other regions which may not be appropriate for Southeastern Anatolia. Seriation, Stratigraphy, and Index Fossils - The Backbone of Archaeological Dating $89.00 It is difficult for today's students of archaeology to imagine an era when chronometric dating methods were unavailable. However, even a casual perusal of the large body of literature that arose during the first half of the twentieth century reveals a battery of clever methods used to determine the relative ages of archaeological phenomena, often with considerable precision.
